Paola's older homes around Park Square and newer properties on the edge of town both deal with settled concrete. Metro Wide lifts sunken sidewalks, porch landings, driveways and patios with polyurethane foam, a cleaner alternative to breaking out and repouring.
Paola is the county seat of Miami County, built around a classic town square with blocks of older homes radiating outward. Many of those houses date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, with long front walks, porch steps and driveways leading back to detached garages. Newer homes and acreages have filled in around the edges of town and out toward Lake Miola and the surrounding countryside.
For older homes, the concrete has usually been replaced or patched at least once, and the sections that remain have had a long time to settle. We often hear about front walks with uneven joints, porch landings that have dropped below the step, and driveways that have sunk beside the house. Newer properties in and around Paola see more of the familiar problems with fill soil: dropped garage aprons and patios that tilt toward the house.
Polyurethane foam lifting raises intact slabs through small ports. It works on homes, on small businesses around the square, and on shop or garage slabs on rural property, and it avoids the mess of demolition on a tight older lot.

Local Conditions
Why concrete settles in Paola.
Paola sits in rolling country in the Marais des Cygnes River basin, with creeks winding through the low ground around town. The soils are heavy clays in many places, and some have strong shrink-swell behavior. In wet springs they swell and soften; in dry summers they shrink and crack, sometimes pulling away from the edges of slabs and foundations.
Older neighborhoods add their own complications. More than a century of changes, from additions and new garages to sewer and water line replacements, has disturbed the soil under many walks and driveways. Concrete laid across an old utility trench can settle unevenly along its length. Large old shade trees in town also dry out the soil around them during late summer, adding to the seasonal movement.
On newer and rural properties, the main factors are fill around foundations and drainage. Gutters emptying beside slabs and runoff from gravel drives can keep soil wet at the edges of concrete, and freeze-thaw cycles work on any gaps through the winter. We look at both the slab and the water around it before recommending a lift.
Signs your slab has lost support
A lip or step-up at a driveway, sidewalk, or garage joint
A patio or walk that tips toward the house
Gaps opening between steps, stoops, and the foundation
Water pooling on a slab or flowing toward the home
Hollow sounds or visible washout along a slab edge
Common Paola Projects
The concrete we lift most often in Paola.
Every slab is different, so we start with what is happening at your property. These are the repairs Paola property owners ask us about most.
Porch landings and steps
Older homes in Paola often have concrete porch landings or steps that have dropped or tipped. Where the slab is solid, foam can raise it back toward the porch. Hollow steps or masonry may need another approach, and we will tell you if that's the case.
Long front walks on older lots
Walks running from the street to a deep-set older home can have many joints and several sunken squares. Lifting the low squares removes trip edges along the whole path while keeping the original concrete and its settled-in look.
Storefront walks near the square
Small businesses near Park Square have sidewalks and entries that see regular foot traffic. Where the owner is responsible for the walk, foam leveling can correct dropped sections with less disruption to customers than a full replacement.
Shop and garage slabs on acreages
Rural properties around Paola often have garages and shops with slabs that have settled at the door or at one corner. Lifting can restore a smoother entry for vehicles and equipment and reduce water pooling inside the building.

Can you level concrete at an older Paola home without damaging it?
Foam lifting is gentle compared with a tear-out. We drill small ports, inject foam in controlled amounts, and watch the slab and anything attached to it as it rises. Older concrete can be thinner, so we look closely at photos before recommending a lift. If a slab is too broken or deteriorated, we will tell you replacement makes more sense.
Is Paola within your service area?
Yes. Paola is within our service area south of the Kansas City metro. When we can get there depends on your exact address and how large the project is. Texting photos of the concrete and your address first lets us review the job and give you a quote before anyone makes the drive, and we will let you know if anything needs a closer look.
Why does clay soil make concrete sink?
Clay changes volume with moisture. When it is wet, it swells; as it dries, it shrinks and pulls away from the bottom of the slab. Over many seasons, those gaps grow, and the concrete settles into them or cracks over them. Water running along the edge of a slab can also carry soil away. Foam fills the gaps and supports the slab, and good drainage helps slow the cycle.
Will concrete leveling get rid of the cracks?
No. Lifting changes the position and support of the slab, but existing cracks stay visible. Raising the sections on either side can bring a crack back into alignment, and crack and joint sealing is available as a separate step to help keep water out.
Is polyurethane foam better than mudjacking?
Both methods lift concrete by filling the space underneath it. Polyurethane uses smaller holes, weighs far less than a cement slurry, cures quickly, and resists washing out. See our polyurethane vs. mudjacking comparison for a full breakdown.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Residential concrete lifting from Metro Wide is backed by a 2-year warranty. We will explain what is covered for your project when we provide the quote.
