Merriam sits along I-35 with Turkey Creek running through its center, and both have shaped how its concrete settles. Metro Wide lifts sunken driveways, walks, patios and business entries with polyurethane foam, keeping the existing slab in place.
Merriam is a small Johnson County city with a big commercial presence for its size. Car dealerships and large retailers line the I-35 corridor and Shawnee Mission Parkway, and Merriam Town Center draws shoppers from across the area. Behind that commercial strip are quiet residential streets, most of them built up between the 1940s and 1970s, with ranch homes, split-levels and a scattering of older houses near the historic downtown along Merriam Drive.
For homeowners, the common problems are dropped driveway panels, uneven front walks and patios that have sunk toward the house. For businesses, it is usually sidewalks, entry slabs and other walking surfaces where settling has created trip edges that customers and staff cross all day. Polyurethane foam leveling raises those slabs through small ports and can be a practical alternative to tearing out and repouring.
Our residential work carries a 2-year warranty, and we also offer crack and joint sealing as a separate service after a lift, which helps keep water from getting back under the slab.

Local Conditions
Why concrete settles in Merriam.
Turkey Creek runs through Merriam alongside I-35, and the creek valley has a long history of flooding. Low ground near the creek tends to have softer, wetter soils, and some properties sit on fill that was placed to raise them above the floodplain. Fill and wet clay are the two conditions most likely to settle under concrete, and the valley has plenty of both.
On higher ground east and west of the valley, the soils are the silty clays common across northeast Johnson County. They swell after heavy rain and shrink in dry spells, and decades of that movement, plus winter freeze-thaw cycles, leave voids under driveways and walks. Older homes with gutters that empty right beside the drive or stoop speed things up by soaking and washing the same patch of soil after every storm.
Commercial lots add load. Where delivery trucks or heavy vehicles run along the edge of a sidewalk or pad, the soil beneath it compresses faster. Before lifting, we look at how traffic and water reach each slab so we can tell you what is likely to keep it stable afterward.
Signs your slab has lost support
A lip or step-up at a driveway, sidewalk, or garage joint
A patio or walk that tips toward the house
Gaps opening between steps, stoops, and the foundation
Water pooling on a slab or flowing toward the home
Hollow sounds or visible washout along a slab edge
Common Merriam Projects
The concrete we lift most often in Merriam.
Every slab is different, so we start with what is happening at your property. These are the repairs Merriam property owners ask us about most.
Dealership and retail sidewalks
Commercial properties along I-35 and Shawnee Mission Parkway have long sidewalks and entry slabs that see constant foot traffic. Lifting settled sections reduces trip hazards without closing an entrance while new concrete is formed, poured and cured.
Driveways on creek-side lots
Homes on lower ground near Turkey Creek often have driveway panels that have tilted or dropped, especially toward the street. Where the concrete is intact, foam can raise those panels and fill the soft spots below them.
Front walks and stoops
Many Merriam homes from the 1950s and 1960s have front walks with uneven joints and stoops that have sunk below the threshold. Raising them restores a smoother, safer path to the door without replacing the original concrete.
Garage floors and aprons
A dropped garage apron leaves a lip that scrapes vehicles and lets water collect at the door. Lifting the apron, and sections of the garage floor if needed, smooths the transition and sends water back out toward the street.

My Merriam house is near Turkey Creek. Will the concrete just sink again?
Foam fills the voids that have already formed and supports the slab, but it can't change the soil or the water around your property. Homes on low, wet ground near the creek can see more movement over time. Good drainage helps a lot: extend downspouts, keep grading sloped away from slabs, and seal open joints. We will point out what we see when we review the job.
Can you level concrete at my business without closing the entrance?
Often we can work in sections so part of an entry stays open, but it depends on the layout. The lifting happens through small ports and does not require breaking out the slab. Tell us about your hours and traffic patterns when you send photos, and we will talk through a plan that keeps disruption as low as practical.
Do I need to be home while you level my concrete?
Not always. For exterior slabs like driveways, walks and patios, we usually just need clear access to the concrete, a place to park our trailer, and vehicles moved off the area. For garage floors, we will need the garage open. We confirm the details when we schedule and let you know when the work is done and when the slab is ready to use.
When is replacement a better choice than leveling?
If the concrete is badly broken, crumbling, severely spalled, or cannot move without damaging a fixed structure, replacement may be the better investment. We tell you when a slab is not a good lifting candidate rather than recommending a repair that will not hold up. Our leveling vs. replacement guide covers the trade-offs.
Can leveling fix water running toward my foundation?
Sometimes. Raising a patio, walk, or driveway panel that settled toward the house can restore some pitch away from the foundation. Drainage also depends on gutters, downspouts, and surrounding grades, so we point out anything that is likely to undo the repair.
How big are the holes you drill?
Polyfoam lifting uses small access ports, much smaller than the holes used for traditional mudjacking. The number and placement depend on the slab. After the lift, the ports are patched.
